  1. Flow errors — the system cannot detect adequate water circulation through the heater
  2. Temperature errors — water is too hot, a sensor has failed, or freeze protection has activated
  3. Component errors — a specific part (heater, pump, sensor) has reported a fault

Flow Error Codes

Flow errors are the most common category. They occur when the water flow sensor or pressure switch detects insufficient water moving through the heater.

FLO / FL / FL1 / FL2

What it means: Insufficient water flow detected. The heater has shut off to prevent dry-fire damage.

Causes in order of likelihood:

  1. Dirty or clogged filter — This is the #1 cause of FLO errors. A filter with months of debris can restrict flow enough to trip the pressure switch. Remove and rinse the filter first.
  2. Low water level — If the water is below the skimmer intake, the pump draws air. Add water to the fill line.
  3. Air lock after drain and refill — After emptying and refilling, air pockets can get trapped in the plumbing, starving the pump. The fix: with jets turned off, open the air bleeder valve (a small valve near the pump union) slightly until water dribbles out, then close it. On some tubs, turning jets on and off rapidly 3–4 times purges the air lock.
  4. Closed or partially closed gate valve — Some installations have manual valves near the pump. Confirm they are fully open.
  5. Failing pump impeller — If the pump is humming but not moving water, the impeller may be broken or worn.
  6. Faulty pressure switch or flow sensor — The sensor itself may have failed and is sending a false flow error.

Steps to fix FLO:

  • Turn jets to high for 30 seconds to attempt to clear an air lock
  • Check and clean the filter
  • Check water level (add if below the skimmer line)
  • Power cycle: turn off the breaker for 30 seconds, then back on
  • If FLO persists after clean filter and full water level, check pump operation and consider calling a technician

LF (Low Flow)

What it means: A softer version of FLO — the system detects reduced flow but not complete blockage. The heater may still run at reduced capacity or cycle off intermittently.

Fix: Same as FLO above. LF often appears before FLO as a warning. Address it early to avoid a full FLO shutdown.

DRY

What it means: Zero flow detected. The heater has shut off to prevent immediate damage from dry-fire — running the heating element with no water would destroy it in minutes.

This is more urgent than FLO. Check water level immediately. DRY can also trigger when a pump fails completely.

Steps to fix DRY:

  1. Check water level — if critically low, add water before doing anything else
  2. Verify the pump is running (listen for motor noise)
  3. Check all valves are fully open
  4. After resolving the root cause, power cycle the tub

Temperature Error Codes

OH / OHH (Overheat)

What it means: The water temperature reached the high-limit shutoff threshold — typically 108–112°F depending on the control system. The heater has shut off and will not restart until the water cools.

  • Cover left on in direct sunlight on a very hot day can cause water to absorb enough heat to trip the high limit
  • Thermostat set too high or thermostat malfunction
  • Failed high-limit sensor reading temperature higher than actual

Steps to fix OH:

HL (High Limit)

What it means: Specific to Balboa systems, HL indicates the high-limit switch tripped — a secondary safety device that physically cuts power to the heater. Unlike OH (which is software-based), HL is often a hardware trip.

Fix: Same cooling steps as OH. If HL trips repeatedly, the high-limit switch may need replacement or the heater's probe is failing.

HtS / Htd (Heater Sensor)

What it means: The heater sensor (embedded in or adjacent to the heating element) is reading outside its expected range.

Sensor Error Codes

SN / Sn1 / Sn2 / Sn3 (Sensor Error)

What it means: A water temperature sensor is reading outside its valid range — either open circuit (sensor disconnected or broken wire) or short circuit (sensor submerged in a grounded connection). Sn1, Sn2, and Sn3 identify which sensor in a multi-sensor system is at fault.

What it means: Not an error — this is the tub's built-in freeze protection mode. When ambient or water temperature drops below a set threshold (typically 40–44°F / 4–7°C), the system automatically runs the circulation pump to keep water moving and prevent pipes from freezing.

When ICE is normal: Any time outside temperatures drop to near-freezing. The tub is protecting itself.

When ICE is a problem: If ICE appears in warm weather, it likely indicates a faulty temperature sensor reading falsely low temperatures. This would incorrectly trigger the pump in summer — confirm the sensor is not failing.

No fix needed if the outside temperature is actually cold. If in doubt, check the actual water temperature with a separate thermometer.


Communication and System Errors

EC (Communication Error)

What it means: The control panel cannot communicate with the main circuit board, or two components cannot communicate with each other.

Common causes:

  • Loose or corroded ribbon cable connecting the control panel to the main board
  • Water intrusion into the control panel
  • Failed control panel or main circuit board

Steps to fix EC:

  1. Power cycle
  2. Inspect the cable connecting the topside control panel to the equipment bay — re-seat if loose

E1 / E2 / E3

Step 1 — Identify the category. Is it a flow code (FLO, DRY, LF), a temperature code (OH, HL, HtS), a sensor code (SN), or a communication code (EC)?

Step 2 — Power cycle first. Turn off the breaker for 30 seconds, then back on. Many intermittent errors clear on restart.

Step 3 — Check the obvious physical causes — water level, filter condition, open valves, pump running.
